Yonge and St. Clair Condos

Without question, Yonge and St. Clair has long been one of Toronto’s most desirable established residential neighborhoods. Positioned amidst Toronto’s majestic communities of Forest Hill, Rosedale and Muir Park, the Yonge and St. Clair neighbourhood is an exclusive enclave of the city’s leading condominium developments.

The Toronto condo market has not seen a lot of true luxury condo developments lately – at least not north of Bloor Street. There have been the Trumps and Ritzs downtown, but Yonge and St. Clair and other Midtown and North Toronto locations, have not seen many but for the three developments along St. Clair west of Yonge. But now there are more, near Avenue Road, so the luxury condo market at Yonge and St. Clair will be well-served in the future.

Call Laurin at 416-388-1960 or or email him today if you are interested in any of these Yonge & St. Clair Condos! Please be sure to let us know if you think a condo is missing.

Park Avenue - 48 St. Clair Avenue West Park Avenue – 48 St. Clair Avenue West
48 St. Clair West, the old Duplate Canada Building, is now “Park Avenue.” When it acquired the Duplate properties, Burnac considered keeping it as an office building, but the market crashed and few wanted to rent space in a “B” class tower. Waiting out the storm, in the late 1990s they decided to transform the building into condos and the results are stunning. A stairwell on the west side of the building has been moved to the rear, allowing its tiny two-foot-square windows to become window-walls for master bedrooms. One of the three original elevators was removed to increase square footage in the units on the west side, which wrap in a U-shape around the remaining elevator shafts. Suites are finished with the highest-quality materials, including granite countertops and enamel cabinetry, kitchens feature high-end appliances, and there’s an overall look of smart, sophisticated, big-city elegance in other rooms.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Upper income purchasers and empty nesters in the affluent surrounding neighbourhoods who are looking to sell their detached homes but still remain close to friends and family have fueled the demand for the Yonge & St Clair location. Many of the condominiums in the area offer maintenance free living without compromising on space.

The established luxury developments of 70 Rosehill, 33 Jackes, Granite Place, 1 Deer Park Crescent, among others, sets the stage for the newest generation of “true luxury” developments, 33 Delisle, The Carlyle, and Park Avenue.

Originally known as the Third Concession Line (with what is now Queen being the First and Bloor the Second), St. Clair started getting some traction when a water-powered gristmill opened in the mid-1830s to join the already established market gardens.

In 1839, the balance shifted in favour of the residential when Agnes Heath and her children moved onto a 40-acre plot of land, noticed a lot of deer milling about and called it Deer Park. As transportation to the wild north started to improve in the 1890s, more and more people began settling here.

The tide shifted again in 1954, when the subway brought businesses north, and office towers, such as the Imperial Oil and Mutual Life buildings, started sprouting up. We’re now seeing a return to the way things were, as just last year the Mutual Life building reopened as One12 St. Clair, a high-end condo with two $3.5-million penthouses. The Avenue and Churchill Park are following close behind.

The architecturally acclaimed Imperial Oil building across the street from One12 was empty and forlorn, waiting for its condo prince to come and give aging Forest Hill-ers a nice place to move into for their final acts. Now we have Imperial Plaza! There’s more to Yonge and St. Clair than Yonge and St. Clair: 150 Balmoral, at the corner of Avenue and Balmoral, was built in 1929 by S. B. Coon and Son, and stands as one of the stateliest Gothic rental buildings this side of the Atlantic. The Algiers apartments to the north are the very picture of swinging 1960s cocktail party pads.

This narrow strip of city has been on the rise, both commercially and residentially, for upwards of a decade, and it shows no sign of slowing down. If you can afford it, it’s one of the most well-rounded neighbourhoods in the city, with plenty of amenities.
