Tecumseth Lofts – 766 King Street West

The Tecumseth Lofts barely qualifies as a conversion. It would appear that a small commercial building was altered and built upon to create these King West lofts. What was once a 2-storey commercial block at the corner of King & Tecumseth had the second storey totally renovated with another 2 storeys added above. The main floor was kept as commercial and retail.

The red brick facade of the Tecumseth Lofts is right at home on this stretch of King Street West

The resultant lofts have ceiling heights averaging 11 feet but soaring up to 28 feet in some places. The Tecumseth Lofts range from 1,600-square-foot 2-storey / 2-bedroom lofts (with terraces) down to the smaller 750-square-foot units. The open concept loft spaces feature skylights, gas fireplaces, granite counters, hardwood floors and Jacuzzi baths – as well as modern kitchens with maple shaker cabinets.

Tecumseth Lofts - 766 King Street West

The Tecumseth Lofts have nicely modern interiors

The former commercial building was divided into 28 units in 1999 by Harhay Construction Management Ltd. (know for Zen Lofts, 169 John, and 66 Portland). There was never really any character to preserve, but Harhay managed to squeeze some concrete beams into the lofts; plus their choice of red brick, key stones and pilasters on the exterior harken back to a previous age.

The commercial building that used to occupy the site of the Tecumseth Lofts

The Tecumseth Lofts blends in nicely with the streetscape of King West, especially with the commercial units at grade. And they certainly have that “King West Loft” style that so many in the area share. Somewhat rare among Toronto lofts, the Tecumseth Lofts offers three-storey suites on the top floor. With three full bedrooms, these units could be ideal for a young family looking to live and work downtown, or a charming combination of home and office for working professionals.

Most of the Tecumseth Lofts are multi-level

With its proximity to the hip Queen and King West areas, the lofts offer easy access to Toronto’s business and financial districts – minutes by car or streetcar (stops at the front door) while the frequent Bathurst streetcar connects to the Bloor Line in minutes. Famous destinations such as the Skydome, Exhibition Place, Harbourfront, Fort York and the Toronto Islands are also all very accessible, and the Gardiner and Lake Shore Boulevard are a short drive away.
