Obstruct away! I use my balcony as storage, anyway

A sweeping view of Lake Ontario with the CN Tower silhouetted against the sunset. I would sip my Cosmopolitan on my balcony and sigh with urban bliss.

But my move from the suburbs to a condo in Toronto didn’t quite materialize as I’d imagined. My husband and I ended up on the third floor of a low-rise building in the more affordable north part of the city, facing west to the high-rise on the same block. There are a few lovely green trees in the lot beside us, zoned for development, where a new condominium building is scheduled for construction. Condos have a habit of sprouting up in close proximity, like miniature cities with all the latest amenities under a few roofs.

Does it bother me that I won’t wake up to the leaves and branches waving in the wind? Well, as a friend of mine says, the view is not important, because “Toronto is your living room.” True enough, and we’re happier for the move.

We’re no longer road-raging along Highway 401 in the morning and evening rush hours, snacking on dry cereal that could have really used the milk or cold toast with sticky peanut butter. We spend more time talking to each other over dinner at home or at a good restaurant. We can even go out to see a show or a play on a weeknight — instead of trying to squeeze in all our chores and quality playtime on the weekend, which happens to commuters no matter how hard they try.

The reality is that a picture-perfect view from your condo is not always an option. What you’re looking out at often comes at a premium price and smaller overall square footage. We chose value over view and rarely use the balcony anyway.

As the appetite for condos shows no sign of waning, more shiny towers and boutiques keep cropping up. Unless your building overlooks protected ravine or woodlands, a view that came with your condo when you moved in might change substantially over time.

Kavan Lee, a broadcast news editor, bought his one-bedroom condo near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue four years ago as the ideal entryway into the Toronto real estate market. He’s seen the area develop with a good mix of shops and services, readily available. He can drive to work in about 15 minutes and jump on the subway across the street when he wants to go out with friends downtown.

“The location’s pretty good, access to the subway is great, and there’s a lot of cool restaurants, cafes and more retail coming in,” Mr. Lee, 30, says.

“When I bought my condo, there was only one building blocking my view and that was directly south, another building in the same complex. Not a big deal because there was a huge gap looking southeast and southwest. However, since that time those views have also been blocked by new buildings. I still have a southeast view, but it’s not as big, and if I go on the balcony I can see east no problem,” he says. “It’s been four years and I still love it.”

The diminishing view is not an issue, Mr. Lee says, because he doesn’t use the small balcony much and he’s on the go more often than he’s at home. Most of his neighbours use their balconies for storage. It’s the lifestyle that he appreciates, and the time to enjoy it, when there’s no shovelling snow or maintenance work required.

“The perks of that, and being in the city, definitely outweigh my lost view.”
