The conversion of an old Toronto Hydro office and storage building into an upscale loft has always attracted a steady current of interest. The historic structure, built in 1951 at the foot of Casa Loma, houses the Madison Avenue Lofts, with 211 units featuring ceilings 10 to 14 feet high. The old hydro building, located at Madison and Macpherson Avenues, was very costly to rebuild and refurbish, but it was the only way to keep its original columns, tall ceilings, stairwells and banisters. Architect Paul Northgrave added two storeys to the top, and combined industrial architecture with Art Deco designs.
The building has a nice mix of young professionals, families and empty-nesters. They are drawn to the former Toronto Hydro storage facility just north of Dupont and Spadina, a brick and concrete hydro building topped up and refurbished with hard and soft lofts. The six-storey structure combines elements of industrial and Art Deco design in its new life after storing wire bundles for Toronto Hydro.
Not only are the ceilings up to 14 feet high, but the windows can reach up to 12 feet. The lofts also feature exposed columns, 9-foot high designer kitchen cabinets, concrete ceilings painted white with exposed duct work and visible conduits. In many ways it is similar to Toronto’s famous Tip Top Lofts – with its Art Deco design and lofts that are not-that-hard.
The striking silhouette of Casa Loma provides a romantic backdrop to this posh Toronto neighbourhood. Casa Loma, a real life medieval castle built in 1911 as one of the largest residences ever built in Toronto. A neighbourhood landmark enjoyed by all as one of Toronto’s most popular tourist attractions!
The rest of the neighbourhood around the Madison Avenue Lofts is full of many great attributes including beautiful architecture, convenient access to the subway, shopping, great parks and close proximity to excellent public & private schools.
