Four in ten Torontonians think their neighbourhood’s getting richer

A new poll shows that four in ten Toronto residents believe their neighbourhood is becoming more affluent.

San Grewal – Toronto Star

According to a new poll four in ten Toronto residents believe their neighbourhood is becoming more affluent while fewer than two in ten think they’re living in a declining part of the city.

Comment: Makes sense. If a lot of them bought in less-desirable areas, which then gentrified, they certainly saw their values increase!

The Forum Research poll surveyed 1,001 Toronto residents Wednesday and Thursday. The results are based on the perceptions of respondents. No census data or other statistics on household income for different parts of the city were used by Forum.

The poll also shows that people’s perceptions of the relative economic trend in their neighbourhood varies considerably, depending on which part of Toronto they live in. In Scarborough, 23% of respondents believe their neighbourhood is getting more wealthy, compared to 63% of residents in Toronto or East York who think their neighbourhood is getting more wealthy. In Etobicoke, 36% of respondents see their neighbourhood as growing richer, and in North York 34% of those polled believe the area they live in is getting wealthier.

Those who responded as being in the highest household income bracket, $250,000-plus, are the most likely to think their neighbourhood is becoming more affluent – 77%. That compares to 41% of respondents across all income brackets who think their neighbourhoods are getting more wealthy.

Only 16% of respondents across the city, representing all income brackets combined, believe their neighbourhood is getting less wealthy. The poll also found that 36% of all respondents believe their neighbourhood is staying the same while 8% don’t know.
